Durham Duplex was delighted that the Master Cutler, Philip Rodrigo, opened its new Rodgers Wostenholm Group heritage knife making workshops at Kelham Island Museum on Friday 20th June 2025

This exciting development, part of Sheffield Museums’ ongoing commitment to preserving the city’s industrial heritage, breathes new life into the traditional skills of the ‘Little Mesters’. Moving the pocket knife making operations into the workshops offers a dynamic space where heritage craft meets modern innovation, ensuring that Sheffield’s world-renowned cutlery-making legacy continues to thrive for future generations. The staff are concentrating on making Star and Cross trade marked knives of Joseph Rodgers and the I*XL marked Bowie knives and pocket knives of George Wostenholm in an un broken line that dates back to 1682.

Proper maintenance and storage of Durham-Duplex blades is essential to ensure safety and maximise blade lifespan. Here are a few key tips:

Clean after use: Remove any debris, product residue, or moisture after each use. For industrial settings, follow the appropriate cleaning protocol depending on the material being cut (especially in food or medical industries).

Dry thoroughly: Ensure the blades are completely dry before storage to prevent corrosion or rusting—especially important for carbon steel blades.

Store safely: Use the original packaging or a designated dry, secure container. For safety knives, always retract the blade after use.

Regular inspection: Periodically check for signs of wear, dullness, or damage. Replace blades at the first signs of reduced performance to maintain precision and avoid machine stress or product damage.

Durham-Duplex also offers blade handling tools and dispensers to improve safe usage in industrial environments.
